Kun Ting Study Hall in Ping Shan

A study hall refers to an ancient school.It is usually built by wealthier clan and the aim was to cultivate and educate the clan members so as to attain achievements and gain pride for the clan.Confucius books xishu (the ‘Four Books’: The Great Learning, The Doctrine of the Mean, Confucian Analects, The Works of Mencius) and Wujin (the ‘Five Classics’: the Book of Poetry, the Book of History, the Book of Changes, the Book of Li [Social forms and ceremonies] and the Book of Annals) were mainly taught in traditional study halls.Teachers were employed by the clan members from the Mainland China.Although the salary was not high, they deserved a lot of respect from the clan members.There is one point to notice is that some of the study halls also serve the function of ancestral worship such as King Law Ka Shuk Ancestral Hall in Tai Po and Kun Ting Study Hall in Ping Shan.Besides, Sin Shut Study Hall in Lung Yeuk Tau and Yi Tai Study Hall in Kam Tin are very famous traditional study halls in Hong Kong.
