Black bricks:Usually used for building walls with space in between to trap air as an insulating layer. As a result, the building inside will stay cool in summer but be warmer during the cold season. |
Granite: Was regarded as one of the most precious building materials so was usually used to pave the eye-catching parts in the ancestral halls and study halls to show the prominent status of the clan in the society. It is also used for the base of columns in order to protect them from moisture and decaying. |
Tiles:Laid on roof to protect the building from rain. They also enhance the drainage of rain and insulation from heat. “Yin ya” or “ku ya” (tile in the shape of a crying face) is the name for tiles with the curve facing up while “yang ya” or “xiao ya” (tiles like a smiling face)are the tiles with curves facing down. |
Wood:Often used for beams and brackets in study halls and ancestral halls. Decorations carved elegantly on these parts show background of the buildings. |
