Law Uk Hakka House,
Chai Wan

Lau Uk (house) is a typical Hakka house built over 200 years ago. Since it was
built by the Law family, the house is called Law Uk. In the beginning of Qing
dynasty, about 300 Hakka people migrated south from Guangdong to Chai
Wan, Hong Kong, to settle down and began to build their village. Since Hakka
people call a ‘village’ as ‘house’ (uk), every village that was built by
the Hakka people is known as ‘house’. For instance, several different
villages in Chai Wan built by the Hakka people are known as Law Uk, Shing
Uk, Nam Uk and Luk Uk, etc. Law Uk was built during the Qianlong reign of
the Qing dynasty. The descendants of the Law family moved out from Law Uk
in 1967 and is transformed into a modern building. In 1989, Law Uk was
declared a monument and restored for permanent preservation. Now, Law Uk
has changed into a museum to display the living environment and agricultural
tools of the Law family so as to gain a better understanding of the development
of Chai Wan and the life style and customs of Hakka people.
