The five major clans of the New Territories in Hong Kong

Hong Kong was occupied by only a few aborigines until late Northern Song Dynasty when the five major clans migrated to the territory. At that time, Jin people from the north invaded ancient China, which resulted in the fleeing of Han people further south to Hong Kong. Wars were provoked in late Southern Song Dynasty by the Mongolians together with their possession of central China, the Hans wanted to escape the autocracy and cruelty from Mongolian rulers. As a result, they moved to Hong Kong for peaceful and stable life. They settled down in the fertile plains and valleys in the New Territories and started to expand. Throughout the following centuries, the five clans, namely Tang, Man, Liu, Hau and Pang, had developed into prosperous villages. When the British took over the New Territories in 1899, Tang Yi-shek and Tang Ching-shi from the Tang clan, Liu Wan-kuk from the Lius, Man Cham-chuen from the Mans, Hau Hon-kai from the Haus and Pang Siu-wun from the Pangs set up an organization to protect Hong Kong from British invasion. Later, the British found out the great amount of land owned by them and named them the Five Major Clans.
