Between 204 B.C. and 220 A.D. was the period of active and rapid development of Chinese architecture. Craftsmen did through research in architecture and the construction and decorations were meticulous.

Between 209 and 220, Buddhism was popular in China and therefore, architecture related to Buddhism was popular such as monasteries, pagodas and stone caves, etc. In terms of style, there were exquisite carvings such as human figures, plants, birds and animals, etc.

From 590 to 906, it was the ‘Golden Age’ for Chinese architecture. Buddhism and Taoism were extremely popular, hence temples, monasteries and palaces were commonly seen. As China was open to the outsiders in the Tang dynasty, there was a cultural exchange between China and the west, architecture had got rid of its traditional style. From a simple to lively style and the expectation of the architectural components was particularly high.

From 906 to1280, the government architecture and folk architecture had extreme development. Regarding the government architecture, the style was elegant and delicate while the folk architecture was more creative especially the decorations on the roof ridges. At the same time, Li Jiehe wrote a book which had recorded information of specifications of constructions of buildings.

From 1280 to 1912, the specifications of Chinese architecture were same as the old system. Until the end of the Ming and early Qing dynasties, as there were gradually more foreigners coming to China, the contact of the two cultures increased, and this had posed an influence on the style of the architectures.

Before 200 B.C., most of the Chinese architecture were simple.
