Traditional Concept of Family and Funerary Values
Filial piety(孝道):
It is the greatest of virtues and must be shown towards both the living and the dead. “Filial" means sons should show their honor to and take care of their parents and ancestors.
Honor the dead and ancestors: Confucians respect the end of the life by giving a sincere funeral service to honor the dead. The name of the dead will be added to the shrine of the family hall.
Giving ancestor offerings is a traditional Chinese custom. It is a way for the Chinese people to show their respect to their ancestors. This practice is still popular in modern Hong Kong. Even Christians may also purchase offerings so that they can burn the offerings to their ancestors.
