Traditional Concept of Family and Funerary Values

"Li"(禮):
In Confucianism, the term ‘Li’ represents propriety or politeness in everyday life. The original purpose of Li is to help individuals to live properly, particularly when maintaining relationships with others.

For example, children should respect their parents and elders, love their brothers and sisters. People should also be care about their friends, and be loyal to the family. People are also expected to express their love and respect to their ancestors and departed relatives through funeral rites.

A good child should:
(1) observe mourning for parents for at least three years;
(2) organize funerals for parents properly;
(3) burn paper offerings so that ancestors can live happily after death.
