The History of Hong Kong Funeral Rites

In the late 19th and early 20th century
In 1869, when the Tung Wah Hospital was built in Sheung Wan, human remains were found in the construction site. The Tung Wah Group therefore buried the remains properly. Afterwards, the government would transfer bodies which nobody took care of to the Tung Wah Group. The Tung Wah group established a number of ‘yishuan’(義莊) to deal with the human remains found by the government.
